After Evita died of cancer on June 26th, 1952, her husband Juan Duarte commissioned her body to be embalmed. Her embalmed body would be used to create a monument larger than the State of Liberty. This never happened because in 1955 President Juan Duarte was overthrown and the body of Evita went missing. Her body was missing for sixteen years. In 1971, the grave of a Maria Maggi was excavated in Milan, Italy. Inside this grave was the embalmed body of Eva Perón. In 1974, after the death of Juan Perón, Evita's body was laid to rest in La Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires.
